The real Atticus

As Jackie so aptly put it: "Jim Crow came when they stopped slavery but the South got to do racist things anyway." Segregation and racism affected everyone in the Old Confederacy--the Southern States that continued to oppress Negroes with separate bathrooms, seats in the back of the bus, and other indignities. But everyone was corrupted by this system, even the Whites. Harper Lee's dad was no different. He was part of the White World of the South. From your research tell me about Lee's dad and how he compares to Atticus.

  1. Harper's padre was a lawyer!. Reminds you of Atticus huh? They both where very smart and their daughters were both mature beyond there years. I tried finding to see if Mr.Lee was racist unlike Atticuys, but I didn't find any information based on that subject. Atticus and Mr.Lee both have first names that start with an "A" as well

  2. Her father, a former newspaper editor and proprietor, was a lawyer who served in the Alabama State Legislature from 1926 to 1938.

  3. Harper Lee's father can somewhat be compared to Atticus, because while Atticus does not seem to be racist, he does have a black servant. He does, however, treat Calpurnia well, and does not abuse/mistreat her. Atticus has also instilled a respect for Calpurnia into Jem and Scout. Harper Lee's father is also a lawyer, like Atticus.

  4. Harper Lee's dad worked in law as an attorney. Which is like Aticus Finch. Harper Lee's dad is basically like Atticus Finch in many ways. Just different in some ways.

  8. Amasa Coleman Lee: The Real Atticus Finch

The character, Atticus Finch, was based upon the father of the author of To Kill A Mockingbird.Born on July 19, 1880, Amasa Coleman Lee grew older, and became a father to Harper Lee. Like Atticus, Mr. Lee was very involved in law in Monroe County. In fact, he participated in the Alabama State House of Representatives. Before that, he was the editor of "The Monroe Journal." He lived a strong, and full life, but unfortunately died on April 15, 1962

  12. In the book, "To Kill A Mockingbird", the character Atticus was based on Harper Lee's real dad, Amasa Coleman Lee. Like Atticus, Amasa was a lawyer and a member of the State Legislature from 1926 to 1938. Amasa wanted Harper very much to be a part of his firm, but she became a writer instead. He was supportive of her regardless, like Atticus. "He was a warm, friendly, and good citizen who served his family, his community, his country and his state extremely well in many varied capacities."
This quote can also explain Atticus's job and determination to win the cases that he pursue as a lawyer.

  14. Her father, Amasa Coleman Lee, practiced law. Before A.C. Lee became a title lawyer, he once defended two black men accused of murdering a white storekeeper. Both clients, a father and son, were hanged.

  16. Aticus and Harper Lees's fathers are some what similar because they were both lawyers .Lee's father, Amasa Coleman Lee, practiced law. Before A.C. Lee became a title lawyer, he once defended two black men accused of murdering a white storekeeper. Both clients, a father and son, were hange , this could be seen both ways . Most people would say he isn't rasist because he dd defend to African-American men , but on the other hand he did have them hung as well . - morgan warren p.4
