  6. Andrew (Andy) Goodman, Michael Schwerner, and James Chaney were all civil rights workers who were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan on June 21, 1964. They were similar to the character Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird because they were also trying to help blacks. The three men were working on registering black voters and investigating the burning of a black church.

  9. James Chaney (May 30, 1943 – June 21, 1964) was one of three American civil rights workers who were murdered during Freedom Summer by members of the Ku Klux Klan near Philadelphia, Mississippi. The others were Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner.
The murders of James Chaney, a 21-year-old black man from Meridian, Mississippi; Andrew Goodman, a 20-year-old white Jewish anthropology student from New York; and Michael Schwerner, a 24-year-old white Jewish CORE organizer and former social worker also from New York, symbolized the risks of participating in the Civil Rights Movement in the South during what became known as "Freedom Summer", dedicated to voter registration.
Michael Henry Schwerner (November 6, 1939 – June 21, 1964), was one of three Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) field workers killed in Philadelphia, Mississippi, by the Ku Klux Klan in response to their civil rights work, which included promoting registration to vote among Mississippi African Americans. He is portrayed in the film Mississippi Burning by actor Geoffrey Nauftts who is identified in the credits simply as "Goatee."

  15. Andy Goodman, Michael Schwerner, and James Chaney would echo the lives of specific characters in To Kill A Mockingbird. The said men were avid civil rights workers. Because of their beliefs, they were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan. At the time, their objective was to investigate the reason as to why a black church was put into flames. They also were working towards giving blacks the right to vote in Mississippi during Freedom Summer. Freedom Summer was a campaign launched in the month of June, in 1964. Its purpose was to register the maximum amount of blacks in Mississippi, to allow them to participate in voting.
As the three were investigating the church, police had them arrested. They were imprisoned for a number of hours, then released, although they were pressed with charges. Hearing that they were released, you would think they were totally free, but as a matter of fact, they were not. Andy Goodman, Michael Schwerner and James Chane had fallen into the hands of the incredibly notorious Ku Klux Klan. The KKK then proceeded to beat them up, and soon murder them.
Their murder had reflected upon the defending of Atticus to Tom Robinson. Since these three consisted of two whites, and one black. There was racism against this.

I think the murders of these three men would echo the lives of the characters in To Kill A Mockingbird. These men were civil rights workers, trying to do the impossible: get black people to vote in Mississippi. Unforunately, during their attempt to register black people to vote, they were arrested by policemen and stayed in jail for a few hours before they were let go into the wee (late) hours of the night. Back in that day, the Ku Klux Klan was notoriously active. When they realized that these three men were released, they took matters into their own hands and decided to end their lives. A while later, the court proved that the Neshoba County’s law enforcement were in cahoots (partnership) with the Ku Klux Klan. This might be similar to the lives in To Kill A Mockingbird by Atticus defending Tom Robinson. The race of these three men were one black, and two white. And Atticus is white so naturally, we would question the interest of Atticus and what does he have in common with Tom. So I think that would be like the three men trying to get black people to vote when they themselves are not of that race and vice versa.

Their names were James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. Two were from the North and labeled locally as "outside agitators." Chaney was a Mississippi black. The murders not only shook the nation and shamed the state of Mississippi but also forced loose the iron grip of white supremacy in the South. On June 21, Mississippi, one of the last bastions of segregation in America and a bloody battleground in the fight for civil rights, reached the low point in its history. On that steamy night three young activists were abducted and murdered in Neshoba County near the small town of Philadelphia.
