Theme

One state requirement is that you be able to write about a literary work's theme or main idea or message or.......you get it. So let's try this. My guess is that there are a dozen easily defensible themes for To Kill A Mockingbird. What is yours? Explain. No minimum word requirement but it seems to me you've spent many hours reading this book and you probably have much to say. This is your chance to express your ideas about it.

  4. I believe the main idea of To Kill A Mockingbird is that you shouldn't judge someone before you ever get to know them or even see them. Scout and Jem both thought that Boo Radley was this bad "ghost" that killed people and stabbed his father. But in reality he was a good person who was sort of protecting Scout and Jem.

  5. i think that the theme of TKAM is integrity. mostly because the main characters jem and scout are face with many situations (robison case/bob ewells death) and make it more clear to the adults what is really fair. they point out the main things that we are taught such as not to lie, steal, ect and try to make the adults practice what they preach no matter the consequences. they point out "its like killing a mocking bird" to show when something is unjust toward another person therefore showing integrity.

  10. My theme of To Kill A Mockingbird is that it is not right to prejusice someone else. Like Tom Robinson in the book, he was killed just because he was an African American. I think that it is not good to judge people based on their skin color.

Out of all the themes that I've searched on the internet, I've chosen racism. According to the internet, racism is a mjor theme in To Kill A Mockingbird. Calpurnia is a servant for the Finches. The people in the neighborhood haven't expressed their opinions about her yet, but Aun Alexandra have. She thinks it's not fit for Scout or even Jem to be in the present of a 'nigger' or rather, 'raised' by a nigger, because the Finches are white. Also, when Calpurnia took Scout and Jem to her church, her 'people' asked her what was she doing with those children. They understood that she was their servant but why would she bring them here? One person expressed her thoughts boldly saying that they should be in their white church and leave theirs alone. Calpurina also spoke in the way that was different than how she spoke normally at the Finches' house. Even racism was expressed in the courtroom. Obviously, not everyone shares Atticus' idea of 'all men are equal'.

I guess the theme is not to do anything bad to a person if it hasn't done anything bad to you 1st("Leave the innocent alone").Like for example why would you kill a mocking bird in the first place if it hasn't done anything cruel to you.It basically just sits there and trys to make your life a little better with music/good stuff.I think the main idea of To Kill a MockingBird is understanding whether people are evil/bad or good; Also talks about how Jem and Scout grew up and what were some of their experiences. The message i think is that most people have wrong oppinions about other people.

  15. There are many arguable themes that can be named for To Kill A Mockingbird, but this is my perspective on the book's theme. After reading this book, you see that there were several times that mentioned killing a mockingbird. Embedded is the message that killing a mockingbird is a sin, and that there is no excuse for doing such an action. Mockingbirds are innocent birds, that have no bad intention but to sing beautiful melodies to all that surround it. I based the book's theme by focusing in on that idea.
In the book, there were several times in which someone was either killed or put in danger, although they are innocent, just as a mockingbird. For example, Tom Robinson. In his case, he was attempting to escape the jail when guards had seen him, and shot him in a split second. Tom had no bad intention, and yet the guards just slaughtered him then and there. The guards could have threatened him, before shooting him. Although Tom was innocent, there were enough lies thrown at him by the Ewells to allow the public eye to see him as a bad person.
Another example was expressed towards the end of the book. Here, Bob Ewell tried to put Jem and Scout in danger by following them home from the Halloween pageant. There, the kids were yanked by someone, but that someone, Mr. Ewell, was pulled back and stabbed with his own knife. The story was put out that Boo Radley was the one to kill Bob Ewell. Examining that, you'd think that Bob Ewell would play as the mockingbird, but when examining the situation thoroughly, Boo was the mockingbird. How so? Well, he was not killed, but the act of taking the situation to court would be a way of killing a mockingbird. If Boo was accused of the murder, the population would see this as intentional, and not of defense. Boo was actually motivated to kill Ewell because he was about to bring harm to the children. It was Boo's only choice to hurt Mr. Ewell. To sum things up, I believe the theme is that it is wrong to bring harm to someone or someone innocent.

  16. My theme for To Kill A Mockingbird is to not be prejudiced. The Finches were living in the small town of Maycomb that was crazy with judgements. Everybody feared and thought the worst of Boo Radley. Throughout the book, we realize he's not a bad man at all, but a kind hearted person.

  17. My idea of the main themes of to kill a mocking bird is that one that the color of your skin shouldn't make the verdict of any case. Like how Tom said that he felt bad for Mayella so then he lost the case because he was black saying that about a white woman. Also that you shouldn't judge someone until you get to know them because they said a lot of negatve things about Boo Radley. When he was really nice he saved their lives and done much more for Jem and Scout.

  18. I think that one of the main themes of TKAM is to be honest and friendly to everyone, not just a chosen few. For example, even though Mr. Ewell's testimony was obviously false, the White community oblidgedley went along with it. Tom Robinson's was quickly discarded.

  19. The theme of To Kill a Mockingbird is to do what is right and to pursue what you think think is right. Considering the name of the book, the theme may also be that To Kill a Mockingbird is bad. Because mockingbirds don't do anything.

  20. i think that the theme of To Kill A Mockingbird is that you shouldn't harm anyone or anything. You should help those in need like how Arthur Radley helped save Jem and Scout's lives.

I thought the book was based around the idea that the legal system is courupt some times, for good or for worst. the inocent are wrongfully occused (is that spelled corectly?)and the guilty are protected, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes not.

  22. think that To Kill A Mocking Bird is an okay book. However it is in no way one of my favorites. I thought that the theme of struggling blacks in the south in a theme that has been over done. we get it ok black were treated like crap. and for a some white lady to put herself in the place of a black person is wrong and she probably had no idea what is what like to be black at the time. none of us do really. well thats just my humble opinion.
